Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Mapes-SSG panels and Mapes Veneer & Glazing Panels?

Mapes-SSG panels are engineered for structural silicone glazing, creating a seamless appearance and making them well-suited for applications with unsupported edges and butt joints. Mapes Veneer & Glazing panels function as traditional glass infill replacements and are commonly used in standard captured glazing systems. SSG panels provide a flush, modern appearance and are custom-fabricated up to 6 inches thick.

What is four-sided structural glazing compared to wrapped-edge glazing for Mapes-SSG panels?

In four-sided structural glazing, the panel is held entirely by structural silicone or toggles without being tucked into a frame, and all four edges are finished with a sealed “pan-in-pan” rivet design. In wrapped-edge glazing, the panel is captured within the system’s glazing pocket on one or more sides, and the edges are finished by folding the exterior skin around to the back of the panel.

What customizations are available with Mapes-SSG panels?

Mapes-SSG panels offer extensive customization to suit specific performance and aesthetic requirements, including thicknesses up to 6 inches and availability in all architectural finishes. Most other Mapes product lines can also be adapted for use in SSG conditions to meet the unique needs of a project.

Why are Mapes-SSG panels used for challenging corner conditions?

Mapes-SSG panels are ideal for challenging corner conditions because they are custom-fabricated to suit the exact geometries of a project. They provide a seamless integration for structural glazing and butt-joint applications, support thicknesses up to 6 inches and feature a lamination warranty up to 25 years.
